5.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the electronic structure and
magnetic properties of some of the 3d-transition metal
chalcogenides studied within the framework of the one
electron band theory. These chalcogenides, like the oxides
described in the earlier chapters, exhibit exotic behaviour
with respect to their electrical and magnetic properties.
The electrical and magnetic properties range from metallic
to insulating and Pauli paramagnetism to ferro or
antiferromagnetism. Both localised and itinerant electron
behaviour are found to exist among these systems and in some
systems the transition from localised to collective electron
states have been found to occur as a function of
temperature, pressure, chemical composition etc. [40,41].
